Lübeck is a compact UNESCO old town on an island, 45 minutes by train from Hamburg. Almost everything worth seeing sits inside the medieval ring, so one day covers the gates, the brick Gothic churches and the marzipan houses, and a second day buys you the port suburb of Travemünde or a beach.

Getting around

Walk. The old town is an island about 1.5 km across and every main sight is inside it. Buses run from the ZOB next to the Hauptbahnhof, with Kohlmarkt and Breite Straße as the old-town stops; a Deutschlandticket is valid on them. Cycling is common and often quicker than driving, but the old-town lanes are cobbled. Taxis rank at the Hauptbahnhof and on Breite Straße.

Watch out

Safety

Lübeck is a low-risk city for visitors. The real issues are pickpockets around the station and Breite Straße on market days, bicycles on shared lanes, and dark, uneven cobbles after rain.
  • Cobblestones and uneven medieval lanes: wear shoes you can walk in, not heels.
  • The Holstentor museum and several church interiors have limited hours and close on some weekdays: check before you build a day around one.
  • The Buddenbrookhaus has been closed for renovation: check the official site before travelling for it.
  • Ferry passengers arrive at Skandinavienkai in Travemünde, not in Lübeck: buses 35 and 50 connect it, and walking between the terminal and the station is not allowed.
  • The Deutschlandticket is a subscription, not a one-off ticket: a regional day ticket or the Schleswig-Holstein-Ticket is safer for a short visit.
