Lübeck is a compact UNESCO old town on an island, 45 minutes by train from Hamburg. Almost everything worth seeing sits inside the medieval ring, so one day covers the gates, the brick Gothic churches and the marzipan houses, and a second day buys you the port suburb of Travemünde or a beach.

Scams and watch-outs

- Ferry passengers arrive at Skandinavienkai in Travemünde, not in Lübeck: buses 35 and 50 connect it, and walking between the terminal and the station is not allowed.
- The Deutschlandticket is a subscription, not a one-off ticket: a regional day ticket or the Schleswig-Holstein-Ticket is safer for a short visit.
Lübeck is a low-risk city for visitors. The real issues are pickpockets around the station and Breite Straße on market days, bicycles on shared lanes, and dark, uneven cobbles after rain.
