Kemijärvi is Finland's northernmost city and the north-eastern passenger railhead, about 80 km from Rovaniemi airport and 50 km from Pyhä. The town itself is small and quiet; its value is the lake, the overnight train from Helsinki and the fells and ski resorts within an hour's drive. Most travellers spend one night, or two if they are skiing at Suomu.

The centre is walkable end to end in under 10 minutes. Local buses and a bookable service-taxi (palveluliikenne) link the villages; order by phone the previous day before 14:00. For Suomu, Pyhä or Rovaniemi you need a car, an intercity bus or a taxi.

Watch out

Safety

Kemijärvi is a quiet, low-crime town and safe to walk at night. The real risks are winter driving (ice, reindeer, darkness), cold exposure and long distances with no phone signal.
  • Reindeer on the roads at any time of year, especially at dusk.
  • Winter tyres are required Dec–Feb; headlights always on.
  • The railway station is unmanned: buy tickets online or at the machine.
  • The Salla border crossing to Russia may be closed: check before planning a crossing.
  • Mobile coverage is 4G from Elisa and basic from Telia; DNA has little signal here.
