Thames is the old gold-mining town at the base of the Coromandel Peninsula, about 1.5 hours from Auckland by road. It has two good museums, a working gold-mine tour and the Kauaeranga Valley 13 km inland. Most travellers sleep one night here before driving north along State Highway 25, or stop for a few hours on the way through.

Getting around

The town is a narrow strip along the Firth of Thames and most of it is walkable. A car is needed for the Kauaeranga Valley, the golf club and the coast road north. InterCity coaches stop in Thames daily; local buses and taxis cover the town.

Watch out

Safety

Thames is a small, quiet town and feels safe day and night. The real risks are the winding coast road, gravel valley roads after rain and cold water at the beaches: swim between the flags and check the weather before any walk.
  • The coast road north (SH25) is winding and busy in summer; allow more time than the map suggests.
  • Kauaeranga Valley road is gravel in parts and can flood after heavy rain: check DOC conditions before driving in.
  • Many Thames businesses close early; eat before 20:00 unless you have checked hours.
  • One-lane bridges on the peninsula: give way to the left as signed.
