Thames
One night in Thames is enough: use it as the gateway base for the Kauaeranga Valley and the Coromandel coast road, not as a destination in itself.
Thames is the old gold-mining town at the base of the Coromandel Peninsula, about 1.5 hours from Auckland by road. It has two good museums, a working gold-mine tour and the Kauaeranga Valley 13 km inland. Most travellers sleep one night here before driving north along State Highway 25, or stop for a few hours on the way through.

Get around
The town is a narrow strip along the Firth of Thames and most of it is walkable. A car is needed for the Kauaeranga Valley, the golf club and the coast road north. InterCity coaches stop in Thames daily; local buses and taxis cover the town.
