Ridgecrest is a small high-desert town on US 395 and CA 178, built around Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake. Travellers use it as a cheap, safe bed between the Sierra and Death Valley, and for the Coso Rock Art tours run through the Maturango Museum. Two nights covers the museums and one tour; one night is enough if you are only passing through.

Getting around

You need a car. Public transport is minimal and often needs booking ahead. Rental desks on North China Lake Boulevard include Avis, Enterprise and Dollar; a local taxi firm also runs. US 395 and CA 178 meet here, and CA 178 continues east toward Trona and Death Valley.

Safety

Very low crime, including violent crime. The real risks are summer heat, desert animals and fast drivers on the surrounding highways.
  • Summer heat: plan drives and hikes before 10:00 and carry more water than you think you need.
  • Desert wildlife: venomous spiders, scorpions and snakes are present; shake out shoes and watch where you step.
  • Highway drivers speed and lose control on the surrounding roads; report dangerous driving.
  • Coso petroglyph tours run on a military base: no foreign nationals, proof of citizenship required, weekend dates only, book through the Maturango Museum.
  • Distances are long and services thin outside town; fill the tank before heading to Death Valley.
