Tsaghkadzor is Armenia's main ski town, 50 km northeast of Yerevan on the slopes of Mount Teghenis at about 1,800 m. Winter brings skiers and a rebuilt chairlift system; summer brings Yerevan families escaping the heat. The town itself is small — a monastery, a park, a ropeway and a strip of hotels — so one or two nights covers it. Public transport is awkward: most travellers come by car, taxi or shared taxi via Hrazdan.

Getting around

The town is small enough to walk between the centre, Kecharis and the park. Taxis are cheap — a centre-to-ropeway run is about ֏300. In winter the ropeway and shuttle services do the climbing; in summer you walk or drive. A car helps for Makravank and for reaching Hrazdan.

Watch out

Safety

Tsaghkadzor is a small resort town and feels safe day and night. The real risks are mountain weather, icy pavements in winter, and unmarked ski terrain: stay on the runs and check the forecast before you go up.
  • Public transport is indirect: most buses and marshrutkas route through Hrazdan, then a taxi up to Tsaghkadzor.
  • Mountain weather changes fast; snow chains or winter tyres are worth having Dec–Mar.
  • Ski and snow-tubing rental quality varies and good gear goes early — rent the night before if you can.
  • Some hotels and lifts close or run reduced hours in the shoulder months; confirm before booking.
