Võru is a small town in Võru County, southern Estonia, on the shore of Lake Tamula. It is not a medieval town and has no rail passenger service; you come by bus from Tartu (about 1 h) or on a Tallinn through-service (3.5–4 h). The centre is walkable in an afternoon, so most travellers use it as a base for the Seto villages, Vastseliina castle ruins and Karula National Park rather than as a destination in itself.

The centre is flat and small enough to walk end to end in about 20 minutes. Local buses cover the outer streets; taxis are cheap for short hops. For Vastseliina, Karula or the Seto villages you need a bus with a timetable check or your own car.

Watch out

Safety

Võru is a quiet, low-crime town and safe to walk at night in the centre. The real risks are icy pavements in winter, unlit roads outside town and deer on the road if you drive at dusk.
  • No passenger trains serve Võru: the railway line is freight only.
  • Buses from Valga run only a couple of times a day and take about 2 h.
  • Some museums and restaurants keep short hours or close on Mondays: check before you go.
  • Winter daylight is short and pavements can be icy; bring grip soles.
