Valga is one town split in two: Estonia's Valga and Latvia's Valka, divided by the Konnaoja creek since 1920. There is no old town and no castle, so it is not a destination in itself. What it does have is the only rail link between Estonia and Latvia, a walkable centre, a strong War of Independence museum and the odd experience of stepping between two countries on a footpath. Treat it as a 3–5 hour stop on the Tartu–Riga corridor, or one night if you arrive late.

Getting around

The centre is small and flat: most sights sit within 15 minutes on foot along Kesk, which becomes Riia westward and crosses into Valka. Two town bus routes serve the outskirts, roughly every 90 min, €0.60 from a kiosk or €1 from the driver. Bicycle paths built in 2009 run through town. No bus crosses into Valka; walk over.

Watch out

Safety

Valga is a small, quiet town and feels safe by day. The real issues are winter ice on pavements, thin late-night transport, and the border footpath: it is open, but you still need your passport with you.
  • The border is a footpath and signs, not a checkpoint: carry your passport, since Schengen rules still apply.
  • Museum texts are mostly Estonian only; book a guided tour in English ahead if you want the history.
  • Some sights, including churches, keep irregular hours: check locally before walking out.
  • The German cemetery and memorial sit at the end of Roheline street, a long walk from the centre.
