New Denver is a village of about 500 on the east shore of Slocan Lake, in the West Kootenays of British Columbia. It was a silver-rush town from 1892 and, in World War II, the site of a Japanese Canadian internment camp; the Nikkei Internment Memorial Centre is a National Historic Site. There is almost no public transit, so treat it as a one-night stop on a Kootenay road trip, not a base.

The village is small enough to walk end to end in about 15 minutes; Carpenter Creek divides the business district on the north side from the parks and gardens on the south. A car is needed for Sandon, Idaho Peak and the lake's far shore.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet village with very little street crime. The real risks are wildlife on trails, cold lake water, and long drives on mountain highways with patchy phone signal: carry water, tell someone your route, and watch for deer at dusk.
  • Public transit is minimal: one BC Transit run on Wednesdays between Nakusp and Slocan City, plus Health Connections trips on Tuesdays and Thursdays that must be reserved in advance.
  • The Nikkei centre is open May–September only; outside those months the village's main sight is closed.
  • The Idaho Peak forest road from Sandon is steep and rough in places; check its condition before driving up.
  • Fuel and groceries are limited; fill up in Nakusp, Slocan or Kaslo.
