Olympia is Washington's capital and the seat of Thurston County, a small city of about 46,000 on Budd Inlet at the south end of Puget Sound. It is a stop on I-5 between Seattle (about 65 mi, 65 min) and Portland (about 100 mi, 2 h), with a compact historic downtown, a free-to-enter Capitol campus and an unusually busy music and arts scene for its size. Most travellers see it in a day; two nights suits a slower South Sound trip with Lacey and Tumwater.

Getting around

Downtown is walkable: Capitol Way runs north–south, Fourth Avenue east–west, and the Capitol campus is a 15–20 min walk south of the transit center. Intercity Transit buses cover Olympia, Lacey and Tumwater; a single ride is $1.25 and a day pass $2.50 (check). Routes 600 and 610 run to Tacoma via Lacey. A car helps for the trailheads, the flight museum and day trips.

Safety

Olympia is a low-risk city by US standards; the real issues are rain, dark winter afternoons and car break-ins near trailheads and downtown lots — leave nothing visible in the car.
  • Rain is the default from October to May: bring a waterproof shell, not an umbrella for the wind.
  • Downtown parking near the Capitol and farmers market fills on weekday mornings and market days.
  • The Amtrak station (Olympia-Lacey Centennial) is about 7.5 mi southeast of downtown in Lacey: allow 20–25 min by car or take bus 64.
  • Cannabis is legal in Washington for adults 21+, but it is illegal to consume in public or drive after use.
