Olympia is Washington's capital and the seat of Thurston County, a small city of about 46,000 on Budd Inlet at the south end of Puget Sound. It is a stop on I-5 between Seattle (about 65 mi, 65 min) and Portland (about 100 mi, 2 h), with a compact historic downtown, a free-to-enter Capitol campus and an unusually busy music and arts scene for its size. Downtown is walkable: Capitol Way runs north–south, Fourth Avenue east–west, and the Capitol campus is a 15–20 min walk south of the transit center.
