Hong Kong and Macau count as separate regions; check whether your ticket qualifies.
  • China ↗Foreign visitors must register their address with the police within 24 hours; hotels do it at check-in with your passport. Carry the original passport at all times: hotels, trains, museums, Tiananmen Square and police checks ask for it.
  • China ↗Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with a foreign card before you fly. QR payment is the default in shops, taxis and many stalls, and some places refuse cash or a foreign card. Carry cash as a backup.
  • China ↗Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and many news sites are blocked. Use an eSIM with roaming (it routes through your home network) or install and test a VPN before you fly; VPN sites and app stores are hard to reach inside China, and only government-approved VPNs are officially permitted.

Suzhou is a 2,500-year-old canal city 25 minutes from Shanghai by high-speed rail, and the classical gardens inside its old moat are a UNESCO site. The old town (Gusu) holds the gardens, temples and canal lanes; the Suzhou Industrial Park to the east is a modern lakeside district with malls and hotels. Two nights covers the core; add a night if you want a water town or a slower pace.

Getting around

The metro covers the old town, both rail stations and the SIP; lines 1 and 4 are the useful ones for visitors. Buses fill the gaps and a taxi across the old town is short and cheap. The old town is walkable between Guanqian Jie and Shiquan Jie.

Watch out

Safety

Suzhou is a low-crime city and safe to walk at night in the old town and the SIP. The real risks are summer heat and humidity, traffic when crossing roads, and unlicensed taxis at the rail stations: use the official rank.
  • Summer is hot and humid with heavy rain in June; plan indoor sights for the middle of the day.
  • Foreigners must buy train tickets at a counter with a passport — self-service machines need a Chinese ID card.
  • Book high-speed rail a few days ahead around public holidays; trains fill up.
  • Ignore taxi touts inside the rail stations and use the official rank.
  • Gardens are busiest mid-morning; go at opening or late afternoon.
