Newhaven

Skip as a base: Newhaven is a 2–3 hour stop for the fort and port views, or a ferry hop to Dieppe. Sleep in Brighton or Lewes instead.

Newhaven is a working port town at the mouth of the River Ouse, about 15 minutes by train from Brighton and Lewes. Its one real sight is Newhaven Fort, a Napoleonic-era coastal fort turned museum, open May to October. Most travellers pass through on the DFDS ferry to Dieppe or use it as a quick stop between Brighton and Eastbourne. There is no reason to stay overnight unless you have an early ferry.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
  • United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
  • United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.

Getting around

The town is small enough to walk: about 15 minutes from the port entrance to the north end. Trains run between Newhaven Town and Newhaven Harbour stations (2 min apart) and on to Brighton, Lewes and Eastbourne. Buses along the A259 connect Brighton and Eastbourne. Parking is available at the fort and Paradise Park.

Town centre (near Newhaven Town station)

Closest to the port and shops; limited options, mostly B&Bs and a Premier Inn on Avis Road.

Seaford

About 4–6 km (2.5–3.7 mi) east; more rooms and a beach, better for a night before or after the ferry.

Brighton

About 30 min by train; far more choice and nightlife if you want a base.

Watch out

Safety

Newhaven is a small, quiet town and generally safe. The main risks are traffic on the A259, uneven paths on the cliffs, and cold, windy weather on the seafront even in summer.
  • Get off at Newhaven Town station for the port, not Newhaven Harbour — counterintuitive but both are on the same line, 2 minutes apart.
  • Newhaven Fort is closed November to April; check opening times before travelling.
  • The port terminal has little to do; long waits there are dull. A Sainsbury's is about 10 minutes' walk east along the A259.
  • Ferry prices and timetables change; book ahead and check the operator's site.
