Newhaven
Skip as a base: Newhaven is a 2–3 hour stop for the fort and port views, or a ferry hop to Dieppe. Sleep in Brighton or Lewes instead.
Newhaven is a working port town at the mouth of the River Ouse, about 15 minutes by train from Brighton and Lewes. Its one real sight is Newhaven Fort, a Napoleonic-era coastal fort turned museum, open May to October. Most travellers pass through on the DFDS ferry to Dieppe or use it as a quick stop between Brighton and Eastbourne. There is no reason to stay overnight unless you have an early ferry.

Get around
The town is small enough to walk: about 15 minutes from the port entrance to the north end. Trains run between Newhaven Town and Newhaven Harbour stations (2 min apart) and on to Brighton, Lewes and Eastbourne. Buses along the A259 connect Brighton and Eastbourne. Parking is available at the fort and Paradise Park.

- The port terminal has little to do; long waits there are dull. A Sainsbury's is about 10 minutes' walk east along the A259.
- Ferry prices and timetables change; book ahead and check the operator's site.
Newhaven is a small, quiet town and generally safe. The main risks are traffic on the A259, uneven paths on the cliffs, and cold, windy weather on the seafront even in summer.
