Mount Vernon is the Knox County seat, about an hour northeast of Columbus on US-36, with a compact Main Street square, a Greek Revival courthouse and a former glass-factory site turned park. It is a car town: sights sit 2–5 km apart and buses run only every half hour. Most travellers use it as a base for the Kokosing Gap Trail and Gambier, or as a night's stop on the way to Wooster and Amish Country.

Getting around
A car is the practical choice: downtown to Ariel Foundation Park is about 2 km, to the fairgrounds about 3 km. Knox Area Transit runs four in-town shuttle lines (Blue, Red, Orange, Green) at $1 a ride, every half hour Monday–Saturday 8AM–4PM, plus a $1 hourly shuttle to Gambier on weekdays. The Kokosing Gap Trail is paved and flat for walking and cycling toward Gambier.
