Verden is a small Lower Saxony town on the Aller, halfway between Bremen and Hanover on the A27. Its draw is compact and specific: a Gothic hall cathedral with a Romanesque tower, Germany's horse museum, and a horse-breeding and equestrian tradition that fills the town in summer. The centre is walkable in a few hours, so most travellers use it as a night's stop on a road trip or a rail break, not a multi-day base.
