Tekirdağ is a working Marmara port 132 km west of Istanbul, capital of its province and a rakı town turned industrial. The old centre is small and walkable — two museums, a Sinan mosque, a bazaar and a long seafront — and it works as a half-day stop or a single night on the road to Gallipoli, Edirne or the border. It is not a beach holiday.

Getting around

Walk anywhere downtown. City buses and private minibuses (dolmuş) run fixed routes every 10 min daytime, dropping to 30 min late evening, last around midnight; flag them down and pay the flat in-town fare. Taxis wait at stands around the centre. The new otogar is 3 km north of the centre — buses 10 and 17 connect it.

Watch out

Safety

Generally safe for tourists. The real risks are road traffic on the D110 bypass, unlit pavements outside the centre, and seafront restaurants with no posted prices — agree the total first.
  • The tourist information office near the ferry pier has had long closures: do not rely on it.
  • Some seafront fish restaurants quote higher prices to foreigners: ask the total before ordering.
  • The nearest railway station is Çorlu; the Tekirdağ branch line is freight only.
  • Summer onshore wind can bring heavy surf on the exposed beaches.
