Tarbet is a small village on the west bank of Loch Lomond, where the A82 and A83 meet and the West Highland Line stops. It is a transport pinch-point, not a resort: the roads carry Glasgow–Highlands traffic all day, and the loch shore is the reason to come. Treat it as a 1–2 night base for hill walks and waterbus crossings, or a lunch stop between Glasgow and Oban or Fort William.

Getting around

Tarbet and Arrochar are two miles apart on a busy main road with a pavement that is unpleasant to walk; Ardlui is eight miles north with no pavement at all. Use the train (Arrochar and Tarbet station) or Citylink buses between the villages. Apr–Oct a waterbus crosses Loch Lomond from Tarbet to Inversnaid several times a day, with one service to Rowardennan; there is no onward transport at either landing, so bring a bike or plan a long walk. A car makes the area far easier, but parking at hill car parks fills early on weekends.

Arrochar

Two miles west on Loch Long; B&Bs, a pub and the Succoth car park for The Cobbler. Quieter than Tarbet and still on the bus route.

Ardlui

Eight miles north at the head of Loch Lomond; hotel, lodges, pods and a campsite. Best for water sports and the West Highland Way bailout point.

Watch out

Safety

A low-crime rural area; the real risks are the A82/A83 traffic when walking between villages, fast-changing hill weather and midges in summer. Tell someone your hill route and carry a map, waterproofs and a charged phone.
  • The A82 and A83 carry trucks and coaches all day; walking between Tarbet and Arrochar on the verge is not a pleasant stroll.
  • Midges are bad near the loch from June to August, especially at dusk; bring repellent.
  • Hill weather changes fast: The Cobbler and Ben Vorlich need proper boots, a map and a forecast check.
  • Mobile coverage is 4G only; 5G has not reached the area, so download maps before you arrive.
  • There are several places called Tarbert in Scotland: say Tar-BET on Loch Lomond when booking transport.
