Beveren
Skip Beveren as a base: it is a 15-min train hop from Antwerp with two free castle parks, so use it as a half-day or a cycling stop.
Beveren is a municipality of about 48,000 people on the left bank of the Scheldt, between Antwerp and Ghent, with the Waasland port on its side of the river. Its centre is small and walkable, with two free castle parks, a market square and a shopping street. Most travellers see it as a short train stop from Antwerp or a start point for flat polder cycling toward Doel and the Scheldt villages.

Getting around
The centre is small enough to walk. Cycling is the best way to reach the polder, Doel and the Scheldt villages; the Flemish cycle node network and tourist-office maps cover the area. Trains run about hourly to Antwerp (about 15 min) and Ghent (about 30 min); buses 81–85 and 89 link Beveren with Antwerp and Sint-Niklaas.

- Beveren station is about 600 m from the centre: fine with a small bag, a walk with luggage.
- Buses and trains thin out in the evening; check the last connection back from Antwerp or Ghent.
- The port and polder roads have truck traffic and few crossings: ride defensively.
- Doel and the nuclear plant area are a long ride north; plan the return before you set off.
