Plettenberg Bay
Give Plett 2–3 nights as a Garden Route stop: Robberg hike, one marine or forest activity, beach time. Skip it only if you want Knysna's lagoon instead.
Plettenberg Bay (Plett) is a small coastal resort on the N2, 35 km east of Knysna and 240 km west of Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth). It is the Garden Route's beach-and-outdoors stop: the Robberg peninsula, a seal colony, whale season from roughly June to November, and forest activities at The Crags 16 km east. Most travellers self-drive and stay 2–3 nights; without a car you are limited to the town centre, the beaches and coach or minivan links.

Getting around
A car is the practical choice: the N2 runs through town and most sights sit 5–20 km out. In town, walking covers Main Street, Central Beach and Lookout Beach. Minivan taxis link Plett and Knysna (about R25), and national coaches stop at the Shell garage on the N2, about 1 km from the centre. Rideshare coverage is thin outside town: check before relying on it.

Safety
- Swimming: currents and surf are strong at some beaches; ask locally which stretch is patrolled and swim between the flags.
- Robberg: the full 4-hour loop has steep, exposed sections and a tidal crossing; start early, carry water and check the tide.
- Do not leave valuables visible in a parked car, including at trailheads and beaches.
- Whale and seal trips run in open water: take seasickness precautions and confirm the operator's permit and safety record.
- Long-distance driving after dark on the N2 is best avoided: animals and unlit pedestrians.
