Zeehan

Give Zeehan half a day: the West Coast Heritage Centre, a walk down Main Street, then move on. Sleep here only if Queenstown and Strahan are full.

Zeehan was the West Coast's biggest town before World War I, when the silver lodes paid. The mines ran out and the population is now around 700. What is left is a wide, near-empty grid of early-1900s public buildings a few kilometres off the A10, plus a good local museum. It is a stop of two to four hours between Strahan and Queenstown, not a base.

  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
  • Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
  • Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Getting around

The town is small enough to walk end to end in about 20 minutes. You need a car for everything else: there is no public transport on the West Coast, and the A10 junction is about 6.6 km east of town.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Main Street

The only real choice: the motor hotel and the caravan park sit within a few minutes' walk of the museum and the takeaway.

Zeehan Caravan Park, Hurst Street

Cabins, powered sites and caravans, close to the centre. Book ahead in summer; the town has very few beds.

Watch out

Safety

Zeehan itself is quiet and safe; the real risks are the drive in, wildlife on the road, black ice in winter and long gaps between fuel and phone signal.
  • Fuel up in Queenstown, Strahan or Rosebery before you arrive; do not count on a pump being open in Zeehan.
  • Mobile coverage is patchy on the A10 and the B27. Download offline maps before you leave the coast.
  • Wildlife on the road at dawn and dusk, and black ice on the A10 in winter.
  • Most businesses are small and keep short hours; the museum and the takeaway are the reliable ones.

This is a basic guide: no airport-to-bed contract, walking clusters or day plans are published for Zeehan. Airport, fare and schedule details are unverified; check the operators before you fly.

What we know, and what is coming

On this page

  1. Best months: Nov–Apr · avoid Jun–Aug (cold, wet, ice on the A10) · month by month →
  2. 3 airports and 2 areas to sleep in
  3. Weather: a 7-day forecast and monthly averages
  4. Cost per day in 3 bands
  5. 4 day-trips, door to door
  6. 4 things to watch out for, with emergency numbers

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for BWT, HBA and LST: last departures, hire-car desks and a Queenstown or Strahan fallback if Zeehan is full.
  2. Walking cluster for the town: West Coast Heritage Centre, Main Street, Spray Tunnel, caravan park.
  3. Place pages with verified hours for the heritage centre and the takeaway, and a fuel-availability note for the A10.
  4. Winter and hostile-weather fixtures so the A10 and B27 can be flagged red.
