Zeehan
Give Zeehan half a day: the West Coast Heritage Centre, a walk down Main Street, then move on. Sleep here only if Queenstown and Strahan are full.
Zeehan was the West Coast's biggest town before World War I, when the silver lodes paid. The mines ran out and the population is now around 700. What is left is a wide, near-empty grid of early-1900s public buildings a few kilometres off the A10, plus a good local museum. It is a stop of two to four hours between Strahan and Queenstown, not a base.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Fuel up in Queenstown, Strahan or Rosebery before you arrive; do not count on a pump being open in Zeehan.
- Mobile coverage is patchy on the A10 and the B27. Download offline maps before you leave the coast.
- Wildlife on the road at dawn and dusk, and black ice on the A10 in winter.
- Most businesses are small and keep short hours; the museum and the takeaway are the reliable ones.
Zeehan itself is quiet and safe; the real risks are the drive in, wildlife on the road, black ice in winter and long gaps between fuel and phone signal.
