Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
- Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
- Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
- Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
- Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
- Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
- United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
- United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
- United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.
Cardiff is Wales's capital and a compact, walkable city of about 360,000 people, built on coal money and rebuilt around a waterfront bay. The castle, the civic centre museums and the Victorian arcades sit within a 20-minute walk of each other, so two nights covers the core. Summer brings festivals and outdoor drinking; winter is mild but wet. It works as a stand-alone city break or a stop on a London–Swansea rail line.

Arrive & move
Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in
Getting around
The centre is flat and walkable: castle to the bay is about 25–30 min on foot along the Taff, or 5 min by train from Cardiff Queen Street to Cardiff Bay. Local trains are run by Transport for Wales and Great Western Railway (GWR); tap or buy at the station. Buses cover the suburbs but are slow in traffic. Driving is a liability in the centre — use park-and-ride from Caerphilly, Cogan or Radyr if you arrive by car.
See & do
Day-trips, door to door
Day-trips
Door to door: About 1 h 15 min
Train from Cardiff Central, about 1 h
Swansea's own bay and market make a full day; the Gower needs a car or bus and more time.
Bridgend
cautionDoor to door: About 45 min to town; add 20 min for Porthcawl beaches
Train from Cardiff Central, about 25–30 min
Town centre has no beach. For the coast, take a local bus or taxi to Porthcawl (about 15–20 min).
Pontypridd
goDoor to door: About 45 min
Train from Cardiff Queen Street, about 30 min
Valleys town with a market and access to the Taff Trail; half a day is enough.
Barry
goDoor to door: About 40 min
Train from Cardiff Central, about 25 min
Barry Island seafront and beach; best on a dry day in summer.
Neath
cautionDoor to door: About 1 h
Train from Cardiff Central, about 45–55 min
A stop toward Swansea and the Brecon Beacons edge; not a destination on its own for most trips.
Llantrisant
cautionDoor to door: About 1 h
Train to Pontyclun then bus or taxi, or drive
Hilltop town with a royal mint; awkward by public transport.
Port Talbot
skipDoor to door: About 1 h
Train from Cardiff Central, about 40–50 min
Industrial town with few visitor draws; pass through toward Swansea instead.

Which area to sleep in
Where to sleep
Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.
City centre (Castle, Queen Street, St David's)
Best first base: castle, arcades, shops and both main stations on foot. Priciest and noisiest on match nights.
Cardiff Bay
Waterfront hotels, restaurants and the Millennium Centre; 15–20 min by train or bus from the centre, quiet at night.
Cathays and Roath
Student and café district near the university; cheaper beds, 15–25 min walk to the castle.
Pontcanna
Leafy residential streets with pubs and brunch spots; 20 min walk west of the castle, good for longer stays.

Watch out
Safety
- Match days at Principality Stadium (rugby and football) fill hotels and pubs and close streets; book beds weeks ahead or avoid the date.
- It rains often and without warning: a light waterproof beats an umbrella in the wind.
- Cardiff Bay is a 25–30 min walk from the centre, not next door — plan the return leg or take the train.
- Some city-centre bars and clubs get rowdy late on weekends; standard big-city night-out rules apply.
- Sunday trading is shorter in Wales: many shops open about six hours only.
