Baltimore is a small harbour village near Ireland's south-west tip, population about 400, and the reason to come is the water: sailing, scuba, sea-angling and short ferries to the Carbery's Hundred Isles. The village itself takes half a day; the islands and Fastnet trips fill the rest. Most visitors arrive by car via Skibbereen, and the bus is thin.

Getting around

The village is walkable in 10 minutes. The islands are too small to need a bike. To reach Skibbereen you need wheels: the R595 is narrow and has no sidewalk. A taxi (Baltimore Skibbereen Taxi, +353 87 151 7901) covers the gap.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. The real risks are the sea and the roads: no sidewalk on the R595, fast-changing Atlantic weather, and ferry or Fastnet trips cancelled without notice.
  • Ferries to Cape Clear, Sherkin and Fastnet are weather-dependent; Atlantic conditions change fast and sailings are cancelled.
  • There are no ferries between the islands: you must return to the mainland and sail again.
  • Fastnet trips run only 2–3 days a week from Baltimore, Apr–Sep, and take about 3 hours each way.
  • Book beds and tables in July and August; the village is small and fills up.
  • Mobile signal is weak on the approach roads.
