Samara is Russia's sixth-largest city, a Volga port and a World War II second capital, when it was called Kuibyshev. The centre is walkable along the river; the metro is one east-west line. Two nights covers the embankment, Old Samara and the space museum. It is a long haul from Moscow by train (13-20 h) and a short flight.
