Sokoto is the seat of the Sokoto Caliphate and the spiritual centre of Nigerian Islam, a dry Sahel city of about 430,000 people in North West Nigeria. Sights are few and close together, so it works as a one-night stop on a northern loop rather than a destination on its own. Heat, not distance, sets the pace: plan mornings and late afternoons, and check your government's state-by-state advice before booking.

Getting around

There is no city bus network. Short trips are by moped taxi (one passenger) or tricycle (two or three); agree the fare before you get on. Taxis and buses mostly serve intercity routes. Distances in the centre are walkable in the cool hours, but pavements are uneven and lighting is patchy after dark.

Sokoto itself is a calm, conservative city, but North West Nigeria has real security risks: check your government's advice for Sokoto State, travel in daylight, keep to the city and its immediate ring, and use a driver you trust for anything outside it.

  • Daytime heat can pass 40 °C from February to April: carry water, cover up and move in the morning.
  • Harmattan dust from late October to February dims the sun and dries your throat and eyes.

  • Moped taxis have no helmets or seatbelts; negotiate the fare first and avoid riding after dark.
