Sokoto is the seat of the Sokoto Caliphate and the spiritual centre of Nigerian Islam, a dry Sahel city of about 430,000 people in North West Nigeria. Sights are few and close together, so it works as a one-night stop on a northern loop rather than a destination on its own. Get around
There is no city bus network. Short trips are by moped taxi (one passenger) or tricycle (two or three); agree the fare before you get on. Taxis and buses mostly serve intercity routes. Distances in the centre are walkable in the cool hours, but pavements are uneven and lighting is patchy after dark.
