Berhampore is the district headquarters of Murshidabad and the site of the East India Company's first fortified cantonment in India, leased in 1757. The town itself is a working Bengali city of about 195,000 people; the draw is the cluster of 18th-century cemeteries, palaces and churches at Cossimbazar, 3–4 km north, plus the Hooghly riverfront and the old cantonment grid. Most travellers see it as a half-day stop on the way to Murshidabad, 24 km north.

Getting around

Totos (electric rickshaws) are the main way to move around and there is no meter: agree the fare before you get in. Cycle rickshaws cover shorter hops. Cossimbazar is 3–4 km from the centre, so a toto or a hired car for the morning is easier than walking. Berhampore Court, Cossimbazar and Khagraghat Road stations all sit on the same line.

Watch out

Safety

Berhampore is a quiet district town and violent crime against visitors is rare. The real frictions are unlit roads after dark, unregulated toto fares and monsoon flooding on low-lying riverside stretches.
  • Totos have no fixed rate: fix the price before you start, and expect to bargain.
  • Old Cossimbazar Palace (Boro Rajbari) is a ruin and the interiors are not accessible.
  • Cemetery and church gates are not always staffed: check locally before making a special trip.
  • Summer afternoons from April to June are punishing; do the sights before 11:00.
  • Carry small rupee notes — change is scarce outside hotels.
