Tuam is a small County Galway town 32 km north of Galway city, with a population of about 9,600 (2022). Its pull is religious history: a 12th-century High Cross, two cathedrals and the ruined church of Teampall Jarlath. The town is compact and walkable, but the outlying sights need a car. Most travellers pass through on the N17 or stop for two to three hours.

Getting around
The centre is flat and walkable: the two cathedrals, the High Cross and Teampall Jarlath sit within about 10 minutes of each other. For Cnoc Meadha, Knockmoy Abbey or Cloonfush you need a car or a taxi. Inter-city buses stop at Presentation College on Joe O'Toole Rd, just north of the Supervalu; the Burkes 427 and 428 services make several stops through town.

Safety
- Athenry is the nearest railway station, but there is no onward public transport from Athenry to Tuam: fix a lift or stay on the train to Galway and take the bus.
- Outlying sights (Knockmoy Abbey, Cnoc Meadha, Cloonfush) are on narrow lanes with no footpath: drive, do not walk.
- Some town-centre accommodation has been used for other purposes in recent years: confirm your booking is a working hotel before you pay.
- The Bon Secours Mother and Baby Home site is a sensitive memorial area with ongoing excavation work: check locally before approaching.
