Ivano-FrankivskІвано-Франківськ
Give it one full day for the old centre, then use it as the gateway to the Carpathians: 2 nights, or 1 if you are only passing to Yaremche.
Ivano-Frankivsk is a compact Galician city of about 230,000 people, built as a private fortress in the 1600s and later shaped by Habsburg, Polish and Soviet rule. The centre is walkable in a morning; the real reason to stop is the Carpathian foothills south of town. Airspace is closed, so you arrive by train or bus from Lviv, Kyiv or Chernivtsi.

- Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
- Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
- Eastern Europe ↗Reach this subregion only from the EU side — Romania for Moldova — through crossings run by recognised authorities; no route through Ukraine, Belarus or Russia is planned here.
- Eastern Europe ↗Re-read your government's advice for Moldova (it covers Transnistria) in the week you travel; the situation next door changes fast.
- Eastern Europe ↗Carry euros in cash for Transnistria and village Moldova; cards stop working at the Dniester.
- Ukraine ↗Check your own government travel advice for Ukraine before any booking; advice depends on your passport and changes without notice.
- Ukraine ↗Airspace is closed; entry is by rail or road from Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania or Moldova, with long queues at busy crossings.
- Ukraine ↗Confirm that your travel insurance and medical evacuation cover apply to Ukraine before you rely on it.

Getting around
The centre is flat and walkable end to end in about 25 minutes. Marshrutkas, buses and trolleybuses cover the rest; a single ride is 10 ₴ (2026 estimate). Bolt, Uklon and OnTaxi are cheap and the easiest option with bags. Trains and marshrutkas to Yaremche and the Carpathian foothills run on paved roads, so you do not need a 4x4 for those; a 4x4 only helps if you drive yourself to rougher mountain roads.

Watch out
Safety
- Airspace is closed: plan rail or bus, not flights.
- Read your own government's travel advice before booking; this desk does not plan around it.
- Air-raid alerts are possible anywhere in Ukraine — know where the nearest shelter is.
- Roads outside the city are badly degraded; allow extra time by car.
- Carry some cash: card machines fail more often than in Western Europe.
