  • Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
  • Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
  • Southern Africa ↗A rental car may leave its home country only with the rental company's cross-border letter, the registration papers and paid road taxes at each post; driving into Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique or Angola without them ends at the border.
  • Southern Africa ↗Across the subregion, plan every road leg to arrive before sunset: livestock, wildlife, pedestrians and unlit trucks make night driving the main cause of serious visitor accidents.
  • South Africa ↗Check visa and entry rules for your passport with the Department of Home Affairs or a South African mission before booking; exemptions depend on nationality, and the new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is optional for most visa-exempt visitors in 2026.
  • South Africa ↗Travelling with children: accompanied foreign children no longer need a birth certificate, but unaccompanied minors, South African children and some passports that omit parents' names still do; check with Home Affairs and your airline before you fly.
  • South Africa ↗Driving is on the left. If your licence is not in English or has no photo, get an International Driving Permit before you travel; rental companies also check it.
  • South Africa ↗National park gates open and close at fixed times; you must be inside your camp before the gate closes, and speed limits in parks are enforced.

Grahamstown, renamed Makhanda in 2018, is a small Eastern Cape university town about 110 km northeast of Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha) on the N2. It has one of South Africa's densest clusters of 19th-century public buildings, more than 40 churches, and the country's biggest arts festival each June/July. Outside festival weeks it is a quiet one-night stop with good museums, not a destination in itself.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The centre is walkable: Church Square, High Street, the Albany Museum buildings and the 1820 Settlers Monument are all within about 20–30 minutes on foot. There is no useful local train; minibus taxis run from Raglan Street to Port Elizabeth (about R40, 3 h) and East London (about R60, 4 h) — check. For game reserves and day trips you need your own car or a booked transfer.

Good beach day, but a long return drive; better as a stop on the way to Port Elizabeth.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Town centre (High Street and Church Square)

Walk to the museums, monument and restaurants; the best base for one night without a car.

Rhodes University area

Guest houses and student lets; quiet in vacations, busy and booked out during the festival.

N2 and Port Alfred road edge

Lodges and self-catering with parking; you need a car for everything.

Watch out

Safety

Central Grahamstown is fine by day and the museums and campus are busy in term time; the real risks are walking alone after dark and unlit streets away from the centre. Take a taxi at night and keep car doors locked on the N2.
  • Festival weeks in late June and early July fill every bed: book months ahead or avoid the dates.
  • Do not walk alone after dark, especially between the centre and student areas; take a taxi.
  • The rail link to Alicedale and Port Alfred is disused: do not plan around trains.
  • Long-distance buses stop in town but services are limited; confirm the stop and time when you book.
