Port Elizabeth — renamed Gqeberha in 2021, though most locals still say PE — sits on Algoa Bay at the eastern end of the Garden Route, 790 km by road from Cape Town. It is a working port and car-industry city with a handful of good beaches, a compact heritage core and Addo Elephant National Park about an hour inland. Most travellers use it as the place they drop a one-way rental car, sleep two nights and fly out, or as a base for Addo and the Sunshine Coast. The wind is real and constant enough that locals call it the windy city.

Getting around
You need a car. The city is spread over 20+ km and the sights are not walkable from each other. All the national rental agencies have desks at the airport; one-way drop-off here is the standard way to end a Garden Route drive. Algoa Bus covers the suburbs but is slow and not aimed at visitors; minibus taxis are cheap (about R10–15 a hop) but routes are hard to read without local help. Metered taxis and ride-hailing work for evenings — agree the fare or use the app.

Central / Richmond Hill
Historic core near Donkin Reserve, Town Hall and St George's Park; cafés in Richmond Hill. Cheaper, but check the block before booking and don't walk after dark.

Watch out
Safety
- Petty theft and smash-and-grab at traffic lights are the main risk; keep bags off the passenger seat and doors locked in the centre.
- Do not walk in the central business district or on the beachfront after dark; take a taxi even for short hops.
- Swim between the flags on Blue Flag beaches — the Indian Ocean here has rip currents.
- Township tours: go with an established operator and a booked guide, not a walk-in.
- Wind can cancel boat trips and make the beach unpleasant; build a spare half-day into the plan.
