Give Galle one to two nights for the walled Dutch fort and the south-coast beaches either side of it; visit outside the southwest monsoon (May-Sep), when the sea turns rough and many guesthouses close.
Galle is a port city on Sri Lanka's southwest coast, built around a 17th-century Dutch fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site, on an earlier Portuguese fortification. Cafes, guesthouses and shops fill the walled town, and the ramparts give a sunset walk. Beaches like Unawatuna and Jungle Beach lie a short ride away on either side. The expressway and coastal train make it easy to reach from Colombo, so it works for two nights with a beach day.

Getting around
The fort is entirely walkable. Three-wheelers reach nearby beaches (Rs 700-1,500, 2026 estimate, check) and ride apps operate in the area; the coastal train from Colombo Fort takes about 2-2.5 h with a cheap second-class fare, and the Southern Expressway cuts the road trip to about 1.5-2 h by taxi or intercity bus (about Rs 900-1,500).

- Touts near the main fort entrance and clock tower push guided tours and shops: agree nothing on the spot if you do not want it.
