Samsø is a 3,700-resident farming island in the Kattegat, reached by ferry from Aarhus, Hou or Kalundborg. It is known for potatoes, renewable energy and a 100 km signposted bike route. Two nights covers the north and south; day-trippers see only one end.

Getting around

Bike is the default: rent in every town or bring your own on the ferry (book bike space online). A local bus links Nordby, Mårup, Sælvig, Tranebjerg, Ballen and Kolby Kås; the summer bus is free, and outside summer the call-in Telebus needs about two hours' notice. Cars come over on the Hou and Kalundborg ferries only.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. The real risks are cycling on unlit narrow roads, cold water and fast-changing Kattegat weather; ferries can be cancelled in strong wind.
  • Book ferry and bike space ahead for June–August and the July festival.
  • The Aarhus catamaran takes passengers and bikes, not cars.
  • Country roads are narrow with no street lighting outside towns after dark.
  • Many kitchens, museums and rentals shut outside the summer season: check dates before booking.
  • Summer buses do not carry extra bikes or carts.
