Coscomatepec is a small colonial town in the mountains of central Veracruz, one of Mexico's Pueblos Mágicos, settled by the Totonac in 1325 and known for its leather workshops, hand-rolled cigars and the October re-enactment of the 1813 storming of the Spanish stronghold. Most travellers see the centre in half a day; the town earns a night or two because it is the closest practical base for Pico de Orizaba, Mexico's highest peak. It is a stop on a Veracruz highlands route, not a destination on its own.

Getting around

The centre is compact and walkable; streets are both numbered and named (Calle 1 Ignacio Zaragoza, Avenida 8 Hermanos Galeana), so use the number first. Taxis cover the terminal and the Córdoba road. For Pico de Orizaba you need a car, a 4x4 or a guided tour.

Safety

The town is calm and the centre is safe to walk by day and early evening. The real risks are mountain roads in fog or rain, altitude on Pico de Orizaba, and petty theft on empty streets after dark: keep to lit blocks and take taxis at night.
  • Altitude: the town sits around 1,600 (≈ US$90) m and Pico de Orizaba climbs past 5,600 (≈ US$350) m; acclimatise before attempting the summit.
  • Afternoon rain from June to September; mountain roads can be foggy.
  • Many businesses close on Sunday and Monday; the tianguis runs Monday morning on Calle 1 Ignacio Zaragoza.
  • Cigar workshop tours are arranged through the tourism office, not walk-in; ask a day ahead.
  • Carry cash: small restaurants and workshops may not take cards.
