Jodhpur is Rajasthan's second city and the edge of the Thar desert, 6 hours by road or 5-6 hours by train from Jaipur. The walled old town sits under Mehrangarh, a fort on a 150 m rock that was never taken by force. Two nights covers the fort, the blue lanes, Jaswant Thada and the clock-tower market without rushing; most travellers pair it with Jaisalmer or Udaipur rather than treating it as a stopover.

Getting around

The old town is a walking zone: fort, Jaswant Thada, Sardar Market and the stepwells are all within 2 km, but the lanes are steep and uneven. Auto-rickshaws have no meters — agree the fare before you sit. Ola and Uber work in the newer city but not inside the walled old town. For Umaid Bhawan and Mandore, take an auto-rickshaw and ask it to wait.

Watch out

Safety

Jodhpur is generally safe for tourists, including solo women in the old town, but the risks are heat, touts and commission-driven shopping. Fix auto-rickshaw fares first, ignore unsolicited guides, and keep to lit lanes after dark.
  • Auto-rickshaws and taxis do not use meters: fix the price first.
  • Rickshaw drivers steer you to shops that pay them commission; buy where you choose.
  • Summer heat is real: April–June tops 40°C, so sightsee before 10:00 and after 16:00.
  • The old-town lanes are steep and uneven; wear shoes with grip, not flip-flops.
  • Drink sealed water and skip ice from street stalls outside hotels.
