Barrington, Rhode IslandBarrington

Give Barrington one half-day: the East Bay Bike Path, the town beach and a bakery stop. Sleep in Providence or Warren — Barrington has no hotels.

Barrington is a small Narragansett Bay town of about 17,000 people, 15 minutes from Providence and next to Warren on Route 114. It is a residential place with a bike path, a four-acre town beach, a boat launch and a handful of bakeries. There is no hotel in town, so most visitors come for a half-day between Providence and Bristol, or stay nearby and drive in.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: sights sit along County Road (Route 114) and Bay Road, and RIPTA buses serve the town but run infrequently. The East Bay Bike Path runs from East Providence through Barrington to Bristol and is the best way to see the waterfront. Walking works only within the centre.

Watch out

Safety

A low-crime residential town; the real issues are road traffic on Route 114, cold water, and swimming bans at the town beach after rain. Standard US precautions apply.
  • Barrington Town Beach closes for swimming after bacteria tests fail; check the town site before you drive over.
  • Beach parking needs a sticker in season (June–August); out-of-town cars should check the rules.
  • The yacht club, country club and Democratic Club bars are members-only.
  • Route 114 through the centre is a busy road with no bike lane in places.
