Rhode Island is the smallest US state but has over 640 km of coastline on Narragansett Bay and the Atlantic. Sleep in Providence for food, museums and Amtrak; sleep in Newport for the mansions, Cliff Walk and harbour. Everything else — South County beaches, Bristol, Block Island — is a day trip. A car makes the coast easy; Providence alone is walkable.
