Edson is a resource town of about 8,400 people on Highway 16, roughly halfway between Edmonton (192 km east) and Jasper. It has no scheduled flights and no local transit, so it works as a car-based overnight stop, a rail flag stop on The Canadian, or a fuel-and-food break on the drive west. Two provincial parks sit just west of town.

Safety

Low-crime small town; the real risks are winter driving on Highway 16, wildlife at dusk and long distances between services.
  • Winter nights fall to about −17 °C and the highway can close in storms: check Alberta 511 before driving.
  • Edson rail station is a flag stop with no local services: tell VIA Rail in advance if you want to get on or off.
  • Long gaps between services west toward Jasper: fill the tank in Edson.
  • Wildlife on Highway 16 at dusk and dawn, especially west of town.
