Sandefjord is a small Vestfold coastal town about 1 h 30 min by train from Oslo, built on whaling money and now a summer holiday base for Norwegians. The sights sit within a 15-minute walk of the harbour: the Whaling Museum, the 1960 whaling monument, the whale-catcher Southern Actor and the Viking-ship replica Gaia. It is a half-day town for sights and a full day if you add the coast path or the Gokstad mound. Most travellers pass through on the way to Larvik, Tønsberg or the Torp airport.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: train station to Brygga is about 10 min on foot. Vestfold Kollektivtrafikk (VKT) runs local and regional buses from the bus station on Møllersgate, just south of the train station; buy on the bus or load a travel card. Trains on the Vestfoldbanen (Oslo–Skien) stop at Sandefjord roughly hourly. Taxis wait at the train station.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. The real risks are cold water and slippery rocks on the coast path, thin bus service on Vesterøya, and summer crowds at the harbour.
  • The Southern Actor opens only weekend afternoons from late June to August; outside those hours you can still see the ship from the quay.
  • Gaia is often away at events; check before planning a visit around it.
  • Buses to the Vesterøya coast path run only a few times a day — check the last return.
  • The Gokstad ship itself is in Oslo; only the restored grave mound and plaques are here.
  • Alcohol is sold in shops only until 18:00 on weekdays, 15:00 on Saturdays, and not on Sundays; Vinmonopolet has the longer hours.
