Meppadi is a small Wayanad junction town on the Ooty road, 12 km from Kalpetta, ringed by tea estates and used as the trailhead for Chembra Peak. There is no bar, no proper sightseeing core and few restaurants, so it works as a quiet 2-night base for treks and waterfalls rather than a destination in itself. Most travellers pair it with Kalpetta or Vythiri.

Getting around

Local buses run between Meppadi, Kalpetta, Sultan Bathery and Vaduvanchal, but they are slow and stop early. Autorickshaws and jeeps handle the last few kilometres to trailheads and waterfalls; agree the fare before you get in. A car with driver for the day is the practical option if you want Chembra, Soochipara and Karapuzha in one day. Walking works inside town and along the estate roads.

Watch out

Safety

Meppadi is a small, low-crime hill town and the main risks are practical: rough roads, monsoon leeches, unregistered treks and no alcohol or late-night transport. Register for Chembra, take a guide for jungle walks, and do not drive the Ghat roads after dark.
  • Chembra Peak trekking is controlled by the Forest Department: register at the guard house near Meppadi and start in the morning — no starts after noon.
  • The Chembra access road is rough; a normal car may not manage it, and it was reported in poor condition in recent years.
  • Meenmutty Falls near Makkiyad is a separate waterfall from the Meppadi-area falls — do not mix them up when booking a jeep.
  • Leeches and slick rock in the monsoon; the second step at Meenmutty is generally only reachable Dec–Apr.
  • No bars in Meppadi; alcohol is bought in Kalpetta.
  • Wayanad roads are narrow with blind bends and night-driving risk from buses and wildlife; avoid arriving after dark if you can.
  • Card and UPI coverage is patchy outside town; carry small rupee notes.
