Bowling Green is a small university town in Northwest Ohio, about 30 mi south of the Michigan line and 25 mi south of Toledo on I-75. It is a college town first: BGSU supplies the planetarium, galleries, film theatre and most of the calendar, while the county courthouse and a few car and machinery museums fill the rest. Sights sit 1–3 mi apart, so a car or a short rideshare does most of the work. Most travellers pass through on the Toledo–Findlay corridor; one night covers downtown and campus, two if you add a museum or an event.

Getting around

Downtown and campus are each under 1 mi across and fine on foot; the gap between them is about 1 mi. Outside those two areas a car is the practical choice — I-75 exit 181 puts you 25 mi from Toledo and 80 mi from Detroit. BGSU runs free colour-coded shuttles on campus during term (not during breaks); the city-subsidised B.G. Transit van is bookable about an hour ahead, weekdays and Saturday, and does not run Sundays. Taxis (Reliable Taxi, Supercab) are cheap for short hops. Bikes work well: the Slippery Elm Trail runs 13 mi south to North Baltimore, dawn to dusk, free.

Watch out

Safety

A low-risk college town; the real hazards are winter driving, campus parking enforcement and late-night weekend traffic downtown. Standard US precautions apply after dark around bars.
  • Winters swing hard: some years bring only a few inches of snow, others blizzards and ice storms. Check the forecast before a January or February drive.
  • It is windy year-round — pack a windbreaker even in early summer.
  • Biking on the downtown sidewalks is illegal; walk the bike through the core.
  • Parking is enforced by both the city and BGSU, with plate-reading cameras on campus. Pay at the kiosk rather than risk the fine.
  • Wooster St opposite campus is unpleasant to walk: no shade and close traffic. Locals use the campus sidewalk or parallel Clough St.
  • The National Construction Equipment Museum is by appointment only — call before driving out.
