Alto Paraíso is the small service town at the door of Chapada dos Veadeiros, 230 km north of Brasília by road. It has the beds, buses, banks and restaurants; the waterfalls and the national park sit 20–40 km out, mostly reached by car or tour. Come for 3 nights, in the May–September dry season, and treat it as a base rather than a sight in itself.

The town is walkable: one main avenue, everything within about two blocks. Waterfalls and the park are 5–50 km out and need a car, a tour van or a shared transfer; some roads are dirt and rough in the rain. Vans run to Vila de São Jorge, and hitching is common but not reliable.

Watch out
Safety
- Rainy season (roughly Oct–Apr) makes dirt access roads and trails slippery; some falls close.
- Vale da Lua has no swimming and a record of accidents on wet rock: stay behind barriers and off slick slabs.
- Long trails such as Sertão Zen and Rio Macaco need a guide and, for some, a 4WD.
- Card and ATM coverage is thin outside the centre; carry some cash for entrance fees and small eateries.
- Distances look short on the map but the last stretch is often dirt road: add time.
