Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
  • Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
  • Czech Republic ↗Czechia is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • Czech Republic ↗The currency is the Czech koruna (CZK), not the euro: decline dynamic currency conversion and avoid street exchange booths.
  • Czech Republic ↗Motorways need an electronic vignette bought before you drive on them.

Pardubice is a 92,000-person rail hub on the Prague–Brno–Vienna line, about an hour from Prague, with a preserved old-town core, a Renaissance castle and a gingerbread tradition. It is a stop, not a base: the sights fit into half a day, and the big draws are seasonal race days rather than the town itself.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The centre is walkable end to end in about 20 minutes. Trolleybuses and buses cover the rest; buy a timed ticket from a machine or by card on board. The main station is 1.8 km west-south-west of the centre — walk it in about 25 min or take a bus.

Kunětická hora castle

go

Door to door: About 1 h

go

Door to door: 1–1.5 h

UNESCO-listed national stud farm for Kladruber carriage horses; check tour times before going.

Ležáky memorial

caution

Door to door: 1.5–2 h

Train or bus south toward Miřetice, then a walk; 30 km south

Hradec Králové

go

Door to door: About 45 min

Train or bus, about 20–30 min

Bigger old town and a good half-day add-on; see the Hradec Králové guide.

Litomyšl

overnight

Door to door: About 1.5 h

Train with a change, or bus

UNESCO castle and a small historic core; better as a night than a rushed return.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Old Town (Staré Město)

Zámecká and Štrossova streets: walk to the castle, Green Gate and restaurants. Best for one night.

Around the main station

Cheaper and practical for early trains, but 1.8 km from the centre and short on evening life.

Zelené Předměstí

Commercial streets, malls and bars; 10–15 min walk from the old town.

Watch out

Safety

Pardubice is a calm, low-risk city; the real issues are pickpockets around the station and on trams, dark riverside paths at night, and unposted bar tabs — ask the total before you order.
  • Main station is 1.8 km from the old town: allow 25 min on foot or a bus ride with bags.
  • Race days (Velká pardubická in autumn, Golden Helmet in summer) fill hotels and roads: book ahead or avoid.
  • Pardubice Airport has almost no scheduled service and no exchange office — one ATM only.
  • Castle park gates close in the evening; the museum keeps separate, shorter hours.

Not a trip line yet

This is a basic guide: no airport-to-bed contract, walking clusters or day plans are published for Pardubice. Airport, fare and schedule details are unverified; check the operators before you fly.

What we know, and what is coming

On this page

  1. Best months: May–Sep · avoid Nov–Mar (short days, cold, few events) · month by month →
  2. 2 airports and 3 areas to sleep in
  3. Weather: a 7-day forecast and monthly averages
  4. Cost per day in 3 bands
  5. 5 day-trips, door to door
  6. 4 things to watch out for, with emergency numbers

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for PED: bus 90 timings against arrivals, taxi fallback, overnight rung.
  2. Three walking clusters with anchors: old town and castle, station and Zelené Předměstí, Kunětická hora.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (castle museum, Green Gate tower, Kunětice castle) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Race-day fixtures for Velká pardubická and Golden Helmet so hotel and transport advice can go green.
