Rocky Mountain House

One night, or two if you hike or paddle: base here for the national historic site and David Thompson Country, not as a Rockies substitute.

Rocky Mountain House is a town of about 6,600 people in the Foothills region of Alberta, roughly 77 km west of Red Deer where the Clearwater meets the North Saskatchewan. It sits at the crossroads of Highway 22 (Cowboy Trail) and Highway 11 (David Thompson Highway) and works as the gateway to David Thompson Country, the foothills and forest west of town. The draw is a fur-trade historic site, river and trail country, and cheap beds compared with Banff or Jasper. Most travellers pass through in a night; hikers, paddlers and ATV riders stay two or three.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Getting around

You need a car. The town is small enough to walk, but the historic site, trailheads and campgrounds are 6–50 km out on Highway 11, 11A, 22 and 752. Fuel up in town before heading west; services thin out fast. No public transit of use to visitors.

Watch out

Safety

Small-town Alberta, low street crime. The real risks are driving: wildlife at dawn and dusk, long empty stretches west of town, winter ice and summer wildfire smoke. Check 511 and Alberta Wildfire before heading out.
  • Distances are long and cell coverage drops west of town: carry water, fuel and a paper map.
  • Wildfire smoke and closures are real in July and August: check Alberta Wildfire and road reports before you drive west.
  • Winter driving needs real tyres and daylight planning; some seasonal campgrounds and businesses close from about October.
  • Wildlife on the highway at dawn and dusk: moose and deer on Highway 11.
