Rocky Mountain House
One night, or two if you hike or paddle: base here for the national historic site and David Thompson Country, not as a Rockies substitute.
Rocky Mountain House is a town of about 6,600 people in the Foothills region of Alberta, roughly 77 km west of Red Deer where the Clearwater meets the North Saskatchewan. It sits at the crossroads of Highway 22 (Cowboy Trail) and Highway 11 (David Thompson Highway) and works as the gateway to David Thompson Country, the foothills and forest west of town. The draw is a fur-trade historic site, river and trail country, and cheap beds compared with Banff or Jasper. Most travellers pass through in a night; hikers, paddlers and ATV riders stay two or three.
