Oldham is a former cotton-milling town on a ridge 10 km northeast of Manchester, with no mainline station and a compact, quiet centre. The reason to come is the eastern edge: Saddleworth villages, the Huddersfield Narrow Canal and Pennine Way walking. Most travellers see it as a half-day from Manchester, or sleep in Uppermill for the hills.

Getting around

No mainline train station in Oldham. Metrolink trams (pink and grey lines) run from Manchester Victoria to Oldham Central and Mumps in about 30 min, every 5–10 min, roughly 06:00–midnight. Oldham is in Fare Zone 3. Buses 83/84 from Piccadilly take about 40 min. Greenfield, near Uppermill, is the only mainline station in the borough, with hourly trains from Piccadilly.
