Skip Oldham town centre as a base: use it for one half-day, then sleep in Manchester or Uppermill. Only come for Saddleworth walks or a Boundary Park match.
Oldham is a former cotton-milling town on a ridge 10 km northeast of Manchester, with no mainline station and a compact, quiet centre. The reason to come is the eastern edge: Saddleworth villages, the Huddersfield Narrow Canal and Pennine Way walking. Most travellers see it as a half-day from Manchester, or sleep in Uppermill for the hills.
