- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.
- California ↗Agricultural inspection stations sit on major road entrances into the state; you may be asked about farm visits and fresh produce.
- California ↗Outside San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego cores, a rental car is effectively required; book it before you land.
- North Coast ↗Some redwood groves and campgrounds need a day-use or campsite reservation in summer; check the park site before you drive.
- North Coast ↗Fuel up in the bigger towns; stretches of US-101 and CA-1 have no services for 40–60 km.

Mendocino National Forest is the Coastal Range forest in northwestern California, about 3,696 km² (913,306 acres) of ridges, oak and pine between the Sacramento Valley and the coast. It is the only national forest in California with no major paved road entering it, so most visits are a deliberate drive on mountain roads to a lake basin or a wilderness trailhead. Four wilderness areas — Sanhedrin, Snow Mountain, Yolla Bolly-Middle Eel and Yuki — hold the quietest walking; Lake Pillsbury is the largest lake and the main base for camping and boating. There is no gate and no entry fee; what you pay for is camping, a boat launch or a fire permit.

Park rules
- Fires
- Only in developed fire rings when restrictions allow; a free California campfire permit is required for stoves and fires elsewhere. Summer bans are common.
- Wilderness areas
- No vehicles, no bikes and no drones in Sanhedrin, Snow Mountain, Yolla Bolly-Middle Eel or Yuki wilderness.
- Camping
- Dispersed camping is allowed on most forest land; use existing sites, keep 30 m from water and pack out all rubbish.
- Elk
- Do not approach, feed or drive between tule elk; keep at least 30 m away and use a zoom lens.
- Roads
- Many forest roads are one-lane gravel with no guardrails; check current closures before you commit to a route.

Time out
Finding the local time zone…
Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.
Accessibility
- Lake Pillsbury campgrounds and the Letts Lake day-use area have short, mostly level walks from parking.
- The wilderness trails are rough, unmarked in places and not suitable for limited mobility.
Visiting lightly
- Pack out all rubbish; there are few bins and no collection on the back roads.
- Use existing fire rings and keep fires small; a stray spark is how most of this forest has burned.
- Keep 30 m from tule elk and never feed wildlife.
- Drive the gravel roads slowly to limit dust and erosion.
Questions people ask
How much does it cost to enter Mendocino National Forest?
Nothing. There is no entrance gate and no entry fee for national forest land (check). You pay only for developed campgrounds, a boat launch or a private resort, and a free California campfire permit is required for fires and stoves outside developed sites.
What are the best hikes in Mendocino National Forest?
The Snow Mountain summit trail is the classic long day out, the Letts Lake loop is the easy option, and the Yolla Bolly-Middle Eel Wilderness is where you go for multi-day backpacking. All are unmarked in places, so carry a map.
When is the best time to visit Mendocino National Forest?
May to June and September to October. Roads are most likely to be open, temperatures are mild and fire risk is lower. July to September is hot, smoky and under fire restrictions, and December to March closes the high roads.
Do I need a permit to camp or hike?
No permit or fee for day hiking or overnight wilderness camping. You do need a free California campfire permit for any fire, stove or barbecue outside a developed campground, and a state licence to fish or hunt.
Can I drive through Mendocino National Forest?
Not on one paved road — it is the only national forest in California without a major paved road entering it. You drive in on Route 162 from Willows or Forest Road M10, and back out the same way or on another gravel road.
Is it crowded?
No. Most visitors stay around Lake Pillsbury and Letts Lake; the wilderness areas see very few people, and you can walk a full day without meeting anyone.
